Deer (sic) Nara

Nara is an approximately 45-minute train ride from Osaka. We took a half-day trip to Nara, mainly to check out the deer enclosure which every one and every review raved about!

I went there expecting Bambis and vast expanses of greenery and land with cute little fawns ambling around and shyly inching toward eager kids to get treats. WRONG. These creatures are fierce! Man, was Disney wrong or what!

Check out those skinny things and the warning signs to caution visitors! My Dad saw the photos and thought it was quite amusing though... Me? I feel for the poor old lady in the illustrations.

But that's not to say I didn't like the experience. I think the concept is really endearing ~ pun intended? The deer had the entire space of Nara Park to roam around, not just the grassy patches. And the deer actually didn't bother us much. Maybe the not bathing had something to do with it *kidding* (Although Heidi really didn't bathe. She had a major aversion to the big deep tub so had to content with wipe-downs everyday.)

There were little carts along the path for visitors to purchase little deer snacks to feed the fawns. (Kicks myself for not getting a shot.) It amazed me that the deer just lounged around the carts and pavement without bothering the old folk manning the carts, but immediately sprung to their feet when a visitor got hold of a stack of deer crackers. What ever happened to good old grass?! (Like I would know it's good or old.) Oh, and watch out for those little black droplets which resemble oversized peppers which litter every step of the Park. Those came from something's behind.

The deer perching dangerously by the side of the road, next to the busy traffic on the main road. How cool is it that you get to be so close to these wildlife!

That's me scrambling to get my camera out while Heidi is stoning. She isn't even looking at the deer on her right! More interested in the whizzing vehicles on her left (-_-)"

Shots of the rare deer munching on grass, with the odd tourists interrupting the meal with the snap of their cameras

We decided to join in the fun and get an uber touristy shot ;) - I love this pic of ZX and Heidi because the 2 of them are smiling so happily! If you zoom in on Heidi's face, she truly is grinning. By this stage of the trip, she learnt that "1-2-3" meant it was photo time, and she would look the camera person's way and growl. LOL. Yup, growl.

Check out the differences in deer and deer-piction. Sheesh.

But it was such a nice cool day that nothing could spoil the mood :) While it was supposed to be the maple viewing season, darn global warming has deemed autumn a little hotter than expected hence the trees with actual autumn maple leaves were few and far between.

The gradating shades of leaf colour. Wouldn't it be lovely if it were all different shades of brown instead?

Veering into the Todaiji Temple ~ more in a later post!

Another for the family album :) I really dig this shot, if only ZX wasn't sleep-standing ;)
